WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SAT AND ACT?
Although the SAT and ACT share many similarities, some key distinctions are worth noting. Below are some key differences between the two tests:
-
Scoring scales and ranges. SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, and ACT composite scores range from 1 to 36.
-
Test format and sections. The SAT includes reading, writing and language and math. The ACT includes English, math, reading, science and an optional essay.
-
Science section. Unlike the ACT, the SAT does not have a dedicated science section.
-
Math sections. Both tests cover arithmetic, algebra I and II, geometry and trigonometry, but the SAT also covers data analysis, while the ACT covers probability and statistics.

WHAT AGE/GRADE SHOULD MY STUDENT TAKE THE SAT OR ACT?
While there is no minimum age or grade for taking either exam, your student should have taken or been exposed to the math included on the exam(s) they choose to take. Generally, your student should take it in the spring of their junior year and consider retaking it in the Fall of their senior year based on their score and growth goals.

HOW SHOULD MY STUDENT PREPARE FOR THE SAT OR ACT?

There are several ways that your student can prepare for themselves to be ready to take the SAT and/or ACT including self guided preparation, one-on-one tutoring, online workshops and practice exams. The most important consideration for parents in choosing what will provide the most help for their student is to determine how their student studies or learns the best. Engaging in multiple study methods is wise and beginning your preparation several months before taking the exam is highly recommended.

HOW CAN THE PTSO HELP MY STUDENT PREPARE?
